Finally, a short day - 5 hours and 6 locks, including the famous Peterborough lift lock. Peterborough was an interesting town. I had expected more and found it to be a little grungy and not as neat and clean as other Canadian towns and cities. Found the liquor store before dinner and restocked last night. I now understand why Canadian officials are concerned about how much beer, wine, and spirits one can bring into the country. It’s because everything is very expensive compared to the States. I thought alcohol would be cheaper here but that’s not the case.

The second lock of the day was the famous Peterborough lift lock. You literally boat into a geared driven lift counter-balanced with equal weight on the parallel lift and are hoisted 100’ in the air to meet and join the continuation of the canal. It is a photographer's

paradise. From the top you can see the Peterborough valley and notice a change in topography, flora and smell. It’s that Up North smell.

We had thought we could make the run to Buckhorn, but Saturday weekend traffic made max speeds only 6 knots. With the help of local lockmasters, we decided to stop at Lakefield just above Lock 26. This is a cute, friendly Canadian town of which you can walk the town from the marina. If weather cooperates, we’ll move tomorrow to Bobcaygeon (pronounced Bob Cajun). We’re about halfway through the Trent Severn and maintaining, if not exceeding our schedule.
