After nearly all day rains yesterday the sun finally came out today! A shift in wind to the northwest calmed the harbor’s water and gave us a good night’s sleep. Today I tended to matters in the engine room, checking all of the vital fluid levels and looking over the transmission seal / gasket repair work. Everything checked out fine and I’m glad I did it to give me peace of mind. In the meantime, the Admiral tidied up things on the inside including taking our bedcover to a local seamstress to tend to some loose hem threads.

Outside we’re under siege from an aquatic fly locally known as “midges”. They look similar to Mayflies or fish-flies except this variety is very small, about the size of a mosquito. Midges do not bite, they appear to live only to reproduce and die. However, they swarm! They attach to those things that are warm such as the white sides of boats in the sun, and sidewalks. Consequently entering or exiting the boat makes you walk the gauntlet through the swarm only to be greeted at the sidewalk by more of the same. The shaded area of the helm is not attractive to these flies so we’re not effected there.

Our nesting Canada geese have hatched two gosling. The entire family was out for a walk and many swims today.

I’ve run into an issue with the radar. While testing all of the electronics yesterday I noticed the radar was not working properly. The technician came by this afternoon, ran it through a series of diagnostic tests and he thinks it may need to be replaced. He is to contact Raymarine and see if parts are still available for this classic unit OR I may need to be considering upgrading. I don’t know the extent of an upgrade since these are networked units. So my radar, chart plotter, depth sounder, AIS, autopilot are linked together. I wasn’t expecting this verdict but won’t operate the boat without radar. Stay tuned.
